The Schonnbrunn Palace, known locally as Schloss Schönbrunn, is one of the main tourist attractions in Vienna. It was a former Summer residence for the Autrian Emperor, now turned into a tourist facility aimed both at the locals and at foreign visitors. Featuring the Palace museum, beautiful gardens and a local market, as well as being close to the local zoo, this Palace is worth a visit. Don’t let the fact that it was a Summer residence fool you into thinking that it’s far away or hard to get to. It’s well within city limits and there’s actually a metro line that stops right next to the main entrance to the Palace. This, along with the number of cheap flights to Vienna, means you have no excuse not to visit this beautiful piece of architecture and planning.
An interesting addition to the gardens is a set of Roman ruins that have very little Roman in them. They were manufactured by the architect Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg and engineered to look like an ancient Roman villa slowly crumbling onto itself. A perfect example of how ingenious the architectural and landscape works are around the palace, that only add to its beauty.
